An intraocular lens (IOL) is an artificial lens used to replace the eye’s natural lens during cataract surgery or clear/refractive lens exchange |(CLE/RLE). The natural crystalline lens refracts light as it enters the eye, focusing it on the retina to create the images we see. As we age, the lens can become cloudy, which we refer to as a cataract.
IOLs are available in different types, similar to the different focusing powers found in eyeglasses or contact lenses. We’ll use various measurement techniques to find which works best for your eyes.
IOLs are made of acrylic, silicone, or other plastics, and coated with a material to protect your eyes from harmful UV rays.
