Providing the Care You Need

Diabetes is a disease that affects the body’s ability to produce and regulate the use of insulin, which helps to control blood sugar levels. If your blood sugar levels are too high, it can cause damage to your heart, kidneys, and blood vessels. Uncontrolled diabetes can affect the tiny blood vessels in the eyes as well, which may lead to permanent damage and vision loss.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) says around 90% of vision loss associated with diabetes is preventable. Early detection of eye conditions maximizes your chances of receiving the proper treatment with effective results.

Diabetic Eye Disease

Having diabetes increases your risk of developing certain eye conditions and diseases. The most common forms of eye diseases associated with diabetes include:

Diabetic retinopathy occurs when the blood vessels in the retina begin to swell, leak, or close off. Additionally, new, abnormal, leaky blood vessels can grow in the retina, all of which can cause vision loss.

There are 2 main stages of diabetic retinopathy, non-proliferative diabetic retinopathy (NPDR) and proliferative diabetic retinopathy (PDR).

NPDR is the early stage of diabetic eye disease that most people with diabetes will develop. With NPDR, the blood vessels in the eyes leak, causing the retina to swell. If the central part of the retina, called the macula, begins to swell, it is referred to as macular edema.

The blood vessels in the eye can begin to close off with this type of diabetic retinopathy, resulting in macular ischemia.

PDR is the more advanced stage of diabetic retinopathy, occurring when the retina begins to grow new blood vessels. These blood vessels are often abnormal and fragile, leaking blood into the vitreous and retina. The leakage causes dark spots in your vision, and a large amount of blood, known as a vitreous hemorrhage, can completely block your sight.

New blood vessel growth can create scar tissue, which may lead to problems with the macula or lead to a detached retina.

Often, the early stages of diabetic retinopathy go unnoticed because it is largely asymptomatic. As the condition worsens, you may experience symptoms such as:

  • An increased amount of floaters
  • Blurred vision
  • Dark or blank areas in your field of vision
  • Poor night vision

These symptoms usually affect both eyes. We are happy to evaluate your eye health and ensure you are getting the care you need.

Testing for Diabetic Eye Disease

A fundus camera is a specialized camera designed to photograph the interior surface of the eye. The high-resolution photos produced allow us to carefully inspect the retina and monitor any changes between appointments.

Optical coherence tomography is a noninvasive imaging technology that produces a cross-section image of the retina. This test allows us to see signs of swelling, deposits, abnormal fluid, and other telltale signs of eye diseases.

Fluorescein angiography is a test that helps to evaluate retinal blood flow. A dye is injected into a vein in the arm, and high-resolution images are taken using a fundus camera to highlight any abnormalities in the circulation. Fluorescein angiography testing allows us to determine if the blood vessels in your eye are functioning normally.

Electroretinography is a noninvasive eye test that measures the electrical responses of the cells in the retina. This test will help to determine if your eyes respond normally to a flash of light. Abnormal results may point to a variety of conditions, including diabetic retinopathy.

If you are concerned about your eye health and/or have diabetes, we would be happy to assess your eyes.
