Making Your Eye Health Our Priority

Proper eye examinations play a significant role in maintaining good eye health and vision. Several eye diseases do not show symptoms in the early stages, so having an eye care professional thoroughly examine your eyes can make all the difference in preserving your vision.

Additionally, detecting eye conditions and diseases in the early stages allows us to administer treatment early to maximize effectiveness.

Common Eye Diseases

Flashes & Floaters

Some people compare flashes to “seeing stars” after being hit on the head. They may appear as sudden flashes of light or they may occur on and off for a few days or longer. Flashes are the result of the vitreous pulling on the retina, which can result in a retinal tear or detachment.

Some flashes may appear as heat waves or jagged lines in one or both eyes, lasting up to 20 minutes, and can be followed by a severe headache. These flashes are often related to migraines, a spasm of blood vessels in the brain.

Floaters appear as specks, lines, or dots in your field of vision. They seem to be floating in front of the eye but are actually inside the eye. Floaters are the shadows cast on the retina by small clumps of gel in the vitreous. A sudden shower of floaters may indicate a vitreous or retinal detachment.

Floaters are more common in people with myopia, those that have had cataract surgery, or individuals that have inflammation in the eye.

Flashes and floaters may appear suddenly in your field of vision, if so, be sure to contact your eye care professionally immediately.

Conjunctivitis, commonly called “pink eye,” occurs when the conjunctiva becomes irritated and inflamed by an infection or allergies. There are 3 main types of conjunctivitis:

  • Viral
  • Bacterial
  • Allergic

Viral conjunctivitis is the most common type and is highly contagious. This type of conjunctivitis is caused by a virus, similar to the common cold. Symptoms include red, watery eyes that burn or sting.

Bacterial conjunctivitis is caused by an infection and is also highly contagious. This type of conjunctivitis will cause sticky discharge and sore, irritated eyes.

Allergic conjunctivitis is not contagious as it is caused by an allergy. Your eyes will feel itchy and watery, and your eyelids may swell.

We are committed to helping you take care of your eye health and vision. Please don’t hesitate to contact us if you have any questions.
