Conjunctivitis, commonly called “pink eye,” occurs when the conjunctiva becomes irritated and inflamed by an infection or allergies. There are 3 main types of conjunctivitis:
Viral conjunctivitis is the most common type and is highly contagious. This type of conjunctivitis is caused by a virus, similar to the common cold. Symptoms include red, watery eyes that burn or sting.
Bacterial conjunctivitis is caused by an infection and is also highly contagious. This type of conjunctivitis will cause sticky discharge and sore, irritated eyes.
Allergic conjunctivitis is not contagious as it is caused by an allergy. Your eyes will feel itchy and watery, and your eyelids may swell.
