Scheduling regular eye exams is vital to monitoring your eye health. Most eye conditions and diseases are asymptomatic, particularly in the early stages, so having a professional examine your eyes can catch problems before progression.

Although you shouldn’t wait until age 40 to have a comprehensive eye exam, The American Academy of Ophthalmology suggests that 40 is the age when early signs of disease or changes in vision begin to appear. Implementing treatment at the first signs of decline can help to preserve vision.
It is also recommended that adults 20 to 30 have their eyes checked every two to three years, and adults 40 to 60 have an exam every two years. However, please schedule an eye exam annually if you have diabetes or a history of eye disease in your family, so we can rule out specific conditions or begin treatment if needed.
As our eyes age, our risk of developing certain conditions and diseases dramatically increases. After age 65, you should have your eyes examined annually to catch early signs of diseases such as glaucoma, cataracts, or age-related macular degeneration.

Before we examine your eyes, we will have a conversation about your ocular and medical history and any current medications you may be taking. This will give us a better understanding of your needs and the risks of developing certain conditions.
Visual acuity tests are used to assess how well you see at distance and near. To test your eyesight, we’ll use a Snellen chart (or a standard letter chart).
If you require a prescription to see clearly, we will use a phoropter to determine what power of lenses you’ll need.
We will also employ a microscopic exam of the front and back of your eyes, as well as tonometry.
