LASIK, or laser-assisted in situ keratomileusis, is a type of refractive surgery used to reshape the cornea. The procedure provides clear vision for people affected by refractive errors, such as myopia, hyperopia, and astigmatism.
Refractive errors cause light to bend improperly when they enter the eye. These errors can cause images to appear blurry or distorted.
Our LASIK procedure is now performed 100% using laser technology. We use an IntraLase laser to open a flap in the cornea with infrared light. This takes only 30 seconds and is followed by a precise laser called an excimer laser which carefully reshapes the cornea. This allows light to focus correctly on the retina.
LASIK will usually correct your vision to make you less dependent on eyewear. You may not even need correction at all!
Before LASIK
If you’re interested in LASIK, we will happily evaluate your eyes and vision to ensure it’s the right option for you. A no-obligation consultation is the first step of the process to discuss your unique needs and goals. We’ll also evaluate your eyes and test for other eye problems that may increase your risk of complications.
It’s important to note that LASIK may not give you perfect vision without glasses or contacts. However, you will probably not have to wear corrective eyewear the majority of the time. You may need eyewear for certain activities only, such as driving at night.
The Procedure
LASIK is a routine surgery that has given millions of Americans clear vision. The procedure is quick and efficient, usually only taking around 10-15 minutes per eye.
You’ll be given numbing eye drops before the procedure, and your eyelids will be held open with a special device called a lid speculum. We will then use a INTRAlase laser to make a thin flap in the epithelium (outer layer of the cornea).
We’ll pull the flap back and use the excimer laser to reshape the cornea, correcting your refractive error. The flap is then replaced. The epithelium will heal in place.
Healing
We may give you a transparent shield to wear over your eyes for the next few days to protect them while they heal. After surgery, we’ll recommend you go home and nap or just relax.
Your eyes will likely feel gritty or scratchy for a few hours following the procedure. We will give you special eye drops to reduce dryness and help your eyes heal.
If you’re interested in LASIK, we recommend scheduling a consultation to discuss your unique situation. Please contact us with any questions!
